The Arizona Hemostasis and Thrombosis Center, in partnership with patients with bleeding disorders, strives to provide individualized care focused on improving health and well-being through an inclusive practice that equitably serves a diverse population.
AzHTC General Description
Hemostasis and Thrombosis Centers throughout the country have become vital resources for patients. The Arizona Hemostasis and Thrombosis Center (AzHTC), at the University of Arizona in Tucson, is a comprehensive multidisciplinary diagnostic and treatment center for individuals and families with congenital bleeding disorders.
This Hemostasis and Thrombosis Center (HTC) was established in 1978 as part of the national network of HTCs supported by federal funding. Over thirty-five years ago, the U.S. network of HTCs was established to provide comprehensive services for individuals and families with inherited bleeding disorders. Today, there are over 130 HTCs throughout the U.S. improving health outcomes and reducing costs. The AzHTC is one of 11 centers within the Mountain States Hemophilia Network region.
The AzHTC is a life span Center that provides multidisciplinary patient and family-centered care. Our team consists of staff that have received extensive and ongoing training and education in the complications of bleeding disorders and the special needs of individuals and families affected by these disorders. Our team works to design an optimal chronic disease and lifestyle management plan that is patient oriented, culturally competent, and is updated regularly to accommodate the individuals’ changing needs. There is also a high-risk obstetrics team/clinic on site to provide service for hemophilia carriers and women with other bleeding and clotting disorders during pregnancy, labor, and delivery as well as an on-site coagulation laboratory to provide timely and accurate diagnostic testing.
The AzHTC team consults with community and payer health care professionals involved in the patient’s care plan. The team is directly involved in:
- Medical management of routine care, procedure planning, and emergency care
- Assuring access to necessary medications
- Patient and family education
- Home treatment training and maintenance
- Genetic testing and counseling
- Mental health counseling referral
- Access to national and regional patient and local assistance programs
- Pharmaceutical company product assistance
- Insurance, Medicare and Medicaid coverage education
- Assessing academic progress and identifying academic goas and needs, many of these services are provided free of charge.
Inpatient and outpatient care is provided at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson. Our hospital is a Level One Trauma Center with an emergency room, urgent care center, and a pharmacy stocked with clotting factor concentrates and other products used to control bleeding.
